Government’s Role in Overseeing SOEs Will Be Clarified – Hon. Asamoah-Boateng

As part of his ongoing working-visits to State-owned Enterprises, Hon. Asamoah-Boateng, the Executive Chairman of State Enterprises Commission, was at Ghana Airports Company on Monday, 10th July, 2017, to acquaint himself with current state of the company. The executive Chairman and his team were welcomed by the MD of GACL Mr. Attafuah and his management team.

Mr. Attafuah, who led the discussion on behalf of his team, took the Executive Chairman and his team through the history of GACL. He told the team how his outfit was “created ten [10] years ago, after decoupling of Ghana Airways Corporation”.

Judging by the average performance of SOEs, Ghana Airport Company is doing well as also buttressed by the ongoing massive infrastructural project in respect of a third terminal which is estimated to cost $270m.

The project, which is being fully-funded by GACL and undertaking by a Turkish Company MAPA, is currently 60% complete and expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2018.

Additionally, “plans to kick-start Airport City 2 Project is far-advanced and concrete decision will be taken when the Board is fully in-place”, Mr. Attafuah revealed.

On his part, Hon Asamoah-Boateng said “the State Enterprises Commission is being positioned to effectively play its oversight role on the performance of SOEs”.

He briefed Mr. Attafuah and his team of the impending restructuring of the Commission that would create a Single Entity for the oversight and management of the State’s interest in all SOEs and other joint venture companies. This is intended to ensure that portfolio entities adhere to good corporate governance practices for optimum financial viability.

“It is part of my vision to have about two[2] of our State-owned Enterprises attaining the status of Fortune-500 companies” Hon Asamoah-Boateng opined.
