MD of Unilever pays courtesy call on Director-General of SIGA
The Managing Director of Unilever Ghana, Mr. George Owusu-Ansah has paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of SIGA, Hon. Stephen Asamoah-Boateng.
He was accompanied on the visit by Mr. Henry Herbert-Malm and Ms. Anna Taylor both from the Corporate Affairs Division of the Company.
The MD explained that the purpose of their visit was to understand what SIGA does, learn from them and also seek possible areas of collaboration.
“If we were a State Enterprise, we would fall under SIGA and therefore it is right that we come to learn from you” he added.
The Director-General presented them with copies of the SIGA Act, and explain that SIGA is a creation of the World Bank, Ministry of Finance and State Enterprises Commission.
“As you are aware, government has a lot of interests but we didn’t have a way of looking after our interests.
SIGA therefore is the official shareholder on behalf of the people of Ghana. We have done all the necessary transfer of shares from the Ministry of Finance to SIGA and are currently working on document transfers.
Just like Mauritius, SIGA is collaborating with a number of institutions to develop a national code of Corporate Governance.
The Managing Director of Unilever and the Director-General of SIGA also discussed the Twifo Palm Oil Palm Plantation and the interest of Unilever in acquiring it. He mentioned he was in talks with the Ministry of Finance and will reach out to Unilever after a decision is taken on it.
Mr. Owusu-Ansah thanked Hon. Asamoah-Boateng for opening his doors to them and offered to SIGA, a copy of their corporate governance code.
“The area of corporate governance is interesting to me; it will be necessary for SIGA to get hold of a copy of the global Unilever Code of Corporate Governance”
He promised that Unilever would like to collaborate with SIGA in that direction.
