The State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) joined key stakeholders, partners, and distinguished guests in celebrating the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s (GBC) 90th Anniversary Launch and the commencement of its Public Lecture Series, held on July 31, 2025.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Authority, Madam Millicent Atuguba, Acting General Manager for Operations, lauded GBC for its distinguished legacy and its longstanding contribution to national development. She reaffirmed SIGA’s commitment to supporting the Corporation as it aligns its mandate with the Government’s Reset Agenda.
“For nine decades, GBC has been the authentic and trusted voice of Ghana, one that places national interest, developmental dialogue, and cultural preservation at the core of its mission. SIGA remains a committed partner and will continue to support GBC in embracing innovation and deepening its relevance in today’s dynamic media landscape,” Madam Atuguba stated.
The Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, welcomed guests with a stirring address that celebrated the Corporation’s rich heritage and outlined its forward-looking vision for public broadcasting in Ghana.
Professor Akua Opokua Britwum, Board Chair of the National Media Commission, officially launched the anniversary celebration, commending GBC’s role in deepening national consciousness, promoting civic responsibility, and advancing democratic values over the years.
Dr. Victoria Smith delivered the inaugural lecture in the anniversary series on the theme, “GBC, The First Chapter: The Making of National Radio.” Her insightful presentation offered a compelling historical narrative of Ghana’s radio broadcasting journey, spotlighting the early visionaries who laid the foundation for public media in the country.
Guests were also treated to rich cultural performances, including a powerful poetry recital by Nana Asaase and traditional dances that showcased the Ghana’s heritage.
The ceremony brought together members of GBC’s Board, retired and current staff, media professionals, and industry stakeholders, and development partners.
